What date is Thanksgiving in 2026?
The US Thanksgiving holiday falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. The date is listed in the federal holiday schedule published by the US Office of Personnel Management. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on a different date, so do not reuse the US date for Canadian planning.
A practical planning timeline
Three to four weeks ahead, confirm guest numbers, travel plans, dietary needs, and the menu. One to two weeks ahead, check pantry supplies, plan shopping, and decide which dishes can be prepared early. Two to three days ahead, buy fresh items and prepare make-ahead dishes. The day before, set out serving equipment and confirm arrival times. On the day, keep food handling and cooking instructions aligned with current food-safety guidance.
Thanksgiving checklist
Use this list as a starting point: confirm guests; ask about allergies and dietary needs; set a spending limit; plan the menu; check oven and serving equipment; make a shopping list; arrange travel; prepare a seating plan if useful; identify tasks guests can help with; and leave room for rest.
How to keep the day manageable
Choose a menu that matches your time and equipment rather than trying to reproduce someone else’s celebration. Assign dishes or practical tasks in advance, label foods that contain common allergens, and keep a backup plan for late arrivals or weather disruptions.
Is Thanksgiving a public holiday in Canada?
Canadian Thanksgiving is observed on the second Monday in October. In 2026, that date was October 12. Employment rules and statutory-holiday treatment can vary by province and territory; check the relevant provincial or territorial government for workplace rules.
